Summary

Today’s passage tells how the congregation of Israel, gathered at Bethel, grieved that one tribe might vanish from among them. So they decided to find wives for the six hundred Benjaminites who had survived. But they had sworn not to give their own daughters to the tribe of Benjamin. So they looked for another way. They struck the people of Jabesh-gilead, who had not come to the assembly. From there they took four hundred young women who had never known a man. As we follow Israel’s steps, we see them plan out their own lives, one method after another. God’s name is spoken, and the place is Bethel. But their hearts have already wandered far from God. They have fallen into the illusion that the best thing is to fix, in their own way, the problem they made themselves.

The decision of the congregation of Israel is pitiful beyond words. In the name of saving Benjamin, they strike the people of Gilead. They do not hesitate to carry off young women who had done nothing wrong.

Meditation Points

1. Across the whole book of Judges, Israel treats marriage with the Canaanites lightly. Yet they decide to cut the bonds of blood with their own kin, the tribe of Benjamin. And yet they still try to keep Benjamin’s line from dying out. Listen to their prayer. They pray to God as if Benjamin were an endangered species. What about us today? How much room do we leave to judge honestly how self-centered our life of faith has become?

“O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today there should be one tribe lacking in Israel?” (v. 3)

2. When God is silent, Israel makes its own solution. They ignore their own responsibility and show only their sorrow. To cover their wrong, they become one in heart and work hard to make yet another set of victims. Can our church communities today really say they are free from this picture of Israel? How can we keep from living in such a blind spot, and wake up spiritually?

“This is what you shall do: every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall devote to destruction.” (v. 11)

3. Israel should have fought this battle against Canaan. Instead, without a second thought, they turn it on their own people. We cannot begin to tell how many things we have seen in the church that defy common sense. More times than we can count, church leadership has done things that even people in the world would not do. Israel looked down on the people of Jabesh-gilead, a small minority, and made them the sacrifice. How well does our church today listen to the voices of the few?
