Summary

Today’s passage begins with the whole congregation of Israel assembled as one at Mizpah. If Bethel, where the ark of the covenant of God was in those days, was the religious center (vv. 27-28), Mizpah was the political and military center. In Judges 1, after the death of Joshua, Israel asked the Lord which tribe should go up first. Now the enemy is not Canaan. They have come together in one place to fight their own brothers, the tribe of Benjamin. Four hundred thousand foot soldiers who drew the sword were there with them. Then they hear the full story from the Levite. He tells them what he and his concubine went through at Gibeah. And he asks them to decide what must be done.

Meditation Points

1. Israel had been slow to answer God’s call. Yet here they gather at the anger of one man. All through Judges, the people lived scattered, each doing what seemed right in his own eyes. Now, because of one woman’s death, they look as if they have become one. Are we perhaps satisfied with simply gathering? We react quickly, in our own way, to whatever is right in front of us. But are we slow to move when God calls?

2. The Levite’s answer sounds like the truth, but it badly twists the facts. He says the men of Gibeah meant to kill him and that they violated his concubine until she died. Yet he leaves out that he himself seized her and pushed her out to them (19:25). He says nothing of his own responsibility for insisting that they stop at Gibeah. And he never once mentions the Lord God. He avoids his own responsibility and paints himself only as the victim. If we let this Levite become a mirror for us, how might the way we see change? Are we living every part of life only from a self-centered point of view?

“Behold, you people of Israel, all of you, give your advice and counsel here.” (v. 7)

3. Israel and the Levite gathered at Mizpah. But Scripture never says that God was with them. In name, they gathered before the Lord. Yet they never actually inquire of the Lord. Even when they do inquire later (v. 18), they have already made their decision. They trust only one Levite’s twisted report. They are carried along by a human anger that wants to take it out on someone. Speaking the name of God is different from truly walking with God. Pursuing outward holiness is different from living out true holiness. If we say we gather before the Lord, but God is not there, what is that gathering really worth? How sure can we be that our worship, our prayer, and our life today are so different from Israel in the days of the judges?
