Four sprinters. One baton. And a question we all carry: Where do I belong?

When South Korea’s men’s 4x100m relay team took bronze at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a national record (38.43s), the podium was historic. But behind the celebration, familiar whispers surfaced about two of the runners: “Are they naturalized?”

Namadi Joel-jin was born in Seoul and raised in Gimpo. Biwesa Daniel Gasama was born in Ansan and waited until middle school to receive citizenship alongside his mother. Both ran with the Korean flag on their chest, yet their presence prompted questions about whether they truly "qualified" to be there.

That tension points to something deeper than sports:

  • Fitting in vs. Belonging: In Braving the Wilderness, Brené Brown notes that fitting in means changing who you are to be accepted. Belonging means being accepted as you are.
  • The Protector Within: Through an Internal Family Systems (IFS) lens, when an exiled part of us carries the ache of not belonging, other parts work overtime—running faster, achieving more, or hiding—just to secure acceptance.
  • A Citizenship by Grace: Earthly belonging is often earned through scrutiny and proof. But Scripture offers a different foundation: "You are no longer strangers and aliens, but fellow citizens with the saints" (Ephesians 2:19). As the Heidelberg Catechism confesses: “I am not my own, but belong, body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Our truest belonging does not depend on proving our worth or perfecting our performance. It rests in Christ, who bore our shame outside the gate so we could be welcomed in.

A Coaching Question for You Today: Is more of your energy currently going toward fitting in or toward belonging? If a part of you is running harder just to be accepted, what is it trying to protect?
